Whether you are moving to a bigger car, changing city or simply want a change, here is how a car sale works in Israel, and what to check first.

Selling it yourself or trading it in

Private sale Trade-in
Price you get Often a little higher Close to the market estimate
Paperwork and effort Adverts, viewings, test drives, negotiation Taken care of
Time Varies Quick
Outstanding loan To be paid off with the buyer or before the sale Paid off as part of the deal

A trade-in rarely gets the highest price, but it saves you adverts and viewings, and it can serve as a down payment on your next car. With John Auto, the trade-in is handled by a partner and we manage the whole process from start to finish.

If there is still a loan on the car

A car bought on credit usually carries a lien in the lender’s favour. To sell it, you must pay off what remains, or the final payment of a balloon loan. The sale price is often used for this: if it is more than the remaining balance, the difference is yours; if it is less, you pay the gap.

Car bought with the olim benefit: the 4-year rule

  • After 4 years of use in Israel: free to sell.
  • Before 4 years, to someone without the right: only possible after 1 year, by paying the tax difference calculated by customs.
  • To another oleh who still has their right: possible, and a new 4-year period starts for them.

The steps of a sale

  1. Valuationmarket value based on condition and mileage
  2. Loanpay off the remaining balance or the balloon
  3. Olim benefitcheck the 4 years or pay the difference
  4. Transferat the post office or online, with the rishayon rechev

The transfer of ownership is done at the post office or online, with the registration certificate (rishayon rechev) and the ID documents of the seller and the buyer. Until it is done, you remain responsible for the car.

Exchanging your car for a new one

Many clients prefer to exchange: the current car is traded in, the outstanding loan is paid off, and new financing is arranged for a new car. That is what we offer with the exchange option, with no amount promised in advance.

Frequently asked questions

Can I sell a car that is still on finance?

Yes, by paying off the remaining balance at the time of sale, often with the sale price.

How much is my car worth?

It depends on the model, condition, mileage and the market. Each valuation is done case by case.

Can I sell my oleh car to another oleh?

Yes, if they still have their right. A new 4-year period starts for them.
